Picture yourself kitesurfing in a turquoise lagoon, palm trees swaying on a white sand beach, with the option to chase waves at the reef when the mood strikes.
Welcome to Diani Beach, Kenya's most popular coastal resort area and a kitesurfing destination that perfectly balances accessibility with authentic African adventure. The reef running along the coast creates a protected lagoon that transforms with the tides—flat water paradise at low tide, choppy conditions and reef waves as the water rises.
Kitesurfing in Diani Beach offers variety, reliable wind, and the chance to combine your kite sessions with safari adventures in one unforgettable trip.
Two Wind Seasons
Kaskazi Season (December to March): The northeast trade wind delivers consistent 15-20 knot conditions almost daily, typically building from 11 AM and peaking between 1-5 PM. Water temperatures reach 28-30°C with air temperatures around 30-35°C.
Kuzi Season (June to September): Kenya's coolest season brings stronger 15-25 knot southeast winds and decent swells up to 3 meters at the reef. Air temperatures drop to 24-28°C with water around 24-26°C—still warm enough for boardshorts.
The Lagoon
A coral reef running 300-400 meters offshore creates Diani's famous lagoon. At low tide, find warm, flat water perfect for learning, freestyle, and freeride. At high tide, conditions become choppier with waves breaking on the outer reef—ideal for more experienced riders seeking variety.
Galu Beach: Often described as 'outstanding'—a quieter stretch with a deeper lagoon and mirror-flat water popular among both kitesurfers and windsurfers.
Tide Matters
Kenya has large tidal ranges (up to 4 meters during springs), making tide awareness essential. All spots are tide-dependent—low tide offers the best flat water conditions, while high tide provides wave riding opportunities at the reef.
Daily Pattern
Mornings typically bring light breezes and flat water—ideal for lessons. Afternoons see the wind increase, creating more challenging conditions with potential waves at the reef for experienced riders.
Best Time to Visit
Late July to September and December to March offer the most reliable wind. Avoid April, May, and early June—the long rainy season brings unpredictable conditions.
Local Tips
Combine your kite trip with a safari to Tsavo or Shimba Hills. The local resorts offer kite storage and easy beach access. Book through established kite schools for the best local knowledge and safety support.
