What if you could escape to a remote lagoon with crystal-clear water, consistent wind, and a landscape unlike anywhere else in Egypt?
Welcome to Hamata, Egypt's southernmost kitesurfing destination and one of the Red Sea's best-kept secrets. Unlike the more developed spots to the north, Hamata offers something truly special: a pristine flat water lagoon surrounded by mangrove forests and three beautiful reef islands waiting to be explored.
Kitesurfing in Hamata is about escaping the crowds and immersing yourself in nature while enjoying some of Egypt's most reliable wind conditions.
Wind Conditions
Hamata is windy year-round, with average winds of 16-25 knots and frequent days exceeding 30 knots. The windiest months are January through June and October through December—essentially avoiding only the extreme summer heat.
The wind direction is consistently side-shore, making it safe and predictable for riders of all levels.
Flat Water Lagoon
The lagoon offers generally flat conditions with water typically knee to waist-deep across a huge riding area. At low tide, conditions become remarkably flat—perfect for freestyle progression. Higher tides and stronger winds bring some chop, but nothing compared to ocean spots.
The sandy bottom and lack of hazards make this an ideal learning environment, while the vast space gives advanced riders room to practice big tricks.
What Makes Hamata Special
Unlike other Egyptian spots, Hamata features lush mangrove forests on the upwind end of the lagoon, adding stunning scenery to your sessions. Three reef islands lie just offshore, offering incredible snorkeling on rest days or during lighter wind periods.
The relative isolation means fewer crowds and a more peaceful atmosphere than busier spots like El Gouna or Hurghada.
Climate
Desert climate means hot, dry conditions most of the year. Summer (July-September) can be extremely hot, making the shoulder seasons more comfortable for kitesurfing. Water temperatures stay warm year-round—no wetsuit needed.
Getting There
Fly into Marsa Alam (RMF) airport, then it's approximately a 2.5-hour drive south to Hamata. Most visitors book package trips with accommodation and transfers included.
Local Tips
Bring reef shoes for beach walking, though the sandy lagoon bottom is comfortable. The best conditions for flattest water are during low tide periods. Don't miss the snorkeling at the nearby islands—the marine life rivals any Red Sea destination.
