What if you could combine world-class wave riding with consistent thermal winds, all wrapped up in the laid-back charm of a Peruvian beach town?
Welcome to Máncora, the northernmost beach resort in Peru and South America's hidden gem for kitesurfers who crave waves. This isn't your typical flat-water destination—it's a place where the Pacific swells meet reliable thermal winds, creating conditions that wave riders dream about.
Kitesurfing in Máncora offers something truly unique: the chance to ride real waves in warm water, under the Peruvian sun, with wind statistics that rival the world's best kite spots.
Wind Season and Conditions
The windy season runs from May to January, with 98% wind reliability at the southern spots (30 minutes from town) and 80% in Máncora itself. Peak conditions occur from July to October, when the thermal winds are at their strongest and most consistent.
Wind typically kicks in around noon, building to 15-28 knots and lasting until around 5:30 PM. Most riders use kites between 7m and 12m, with the larger sizes needed early season and smaller kites during peak months.
Wave Conditions
What sets Máncora apart is its waves. The region receives both summer swells (north and northwest) and winter swells (south and southwest), meaning there are rideable waves almost year-round. The waves rarely exceed 3 meters, making them perfect for kite-wave riding progression.
Nearby spots like Baterias offer bigger waves (2-4 meters) with side-onshore winds for more experienced riders seeking a challenge.
Nearby Spots
The North Shore offers several world-class wave riding locations including Nuro and the legendary Cabo Blanco. Each spot has its own character, and the variety means you can chase the best conditions each day.
Climate and Water
Peru's northern coast enjoys hot, dry, and sunny weather almost every day, with average temperatures around 27°C. Water temperatures sit around 20°C—comfortable but slightly cooler than tropical destinations, so a spring wetsuit is recommended during the cooler months.
Local Tips
Join one of the local kite camps to access the best spots and local knowledge. The wind builds through the day, so use morning hours for exploring the town or surfing before switching to your kite after lunch. December and January can have waves but lighter wind—best for intermediate wave riders who don't need overpowered conditions.
