What if you could ride the same waves that have crowned world champions, in a place where 15-25 knot trade winds blow almost daily for eight months of the year?

Welcome to Ponta Preta, the jewel of Cape Verde's kitesurfing scene and one of the most famous wave riding spots on the planet. Located on the island of Sal, this legendary break has hosted the GKA Kite World Tour and is home to wave riding icons Mitu Monteiro and Airton Cozzolino.

Kitesurfing in Ponta Preta isn't for the faint of heart—this is an advanced rider's playground where powerful Atlantic swells meet consistent trade winds to create world-class conditions.

Wind Season and Conditions

The prime season runs from November to June, when the northeast trade winds deliver consistent 15-25 knot conditions almost daily. February and March bring the strongest winds, while April and May offer excellent conditions with steadier breezes and calmer water surfaces between sets.

When it's windy, expect all-day sessions—though the wind typically peaks between 9 AM and 3 PM. Most riders use 9m to 12m kites depending on conditions.

Wave Conditions

Ponta Preta is renowned for its powerful, fast-breaking waves that can reach 3-6 meters on solid swells. The cross-offshore wind creates perfect conditions for wave riding, with long walls that allow for multiple turns and aerials.

The wave breaks close to rocks, demanding respect and experience. The shore break can be challenging, but once you're out, the reward is some of the best kite-wave riding anywhere in the world.

Skill Level

This is strictly an advanced rider's spot. The combination of powerful waves, offshore wind direction, and rocky hazards means beginners and intermediates should look elsewhere on the island. Santa Maria's Kite Beach offers much more forgiving conditions for those still building their skills.

Climate

Cape Verde enjoys a warm, dry climate year-round with air temperatures between 24-30°C. Water temperatures hover around 22-26°C—comfortable for boardshorts, though some riders prefer a shortie for longer sessions.

Local Tips

Never kite Ponta Preta alone due to the offshore wind direction. Check both wind and swell forecasts—big swells combined with strong winds create expert-only conditions. The local kite community is welcoming but expects visitors to know their limits. If you're not confident in waves, spend time at the flatter spots first.
