Have you ever dreamed of kitesurfing on butter-flat water with trade winds so consistent you could set your watch by them?

Welcome to Punta Chame, a small fishing village on Panama's Pacific coast that has become one of Central America's best-kept kitesurfing secrets. Located just 100km from Panama City, this narrow peninsula stretches into the Bay of Chame, creating the perfect conditions for kitesurfers of all levels.

What makes kitesurfing in Punta Chame truly special is the combination of reliable wind, diverse riding conditions, and that laid-back Panamanian atmosphere that makes every session feel like a mini vacation.

Wind Season and Conditions

The prime kitesurfing season runs from December to April, coinciding with Panama's dry season. During these months, the northerly trade winds blow consistently at 15-25 knots, with thermal effects stabilizing the wind throughout the day. Expect around 80-90% of days to be kiteable during peak season.

Most riders find a 9m and 12m kite setup ideal, though occasionally you might reach for a 7m on stronger days or a 14m during lighter sessions. The wind typically builds from late morning and stays strong through the afternoon.

Kite Spots

La Punta (Main Beach): The central spot at the tip of the peninsula offers excellent conditions for beginners with plenty of space and low tide revealing up to 150 meters of sandy beach away from hazards.

The Sandbars: During spring tides (full and new moon), Punta Chame transforms into a world-class flat water paradise. The sandbars stretch up to 2km from John Wayne Island, creating mirror-flat conditions that freestyle and freeride enthusiasts dream about.

The Lagoons: Several lagoons offer perfect mid-tide conditions. A mini lagoon sits 5 minutes downwind from most accommodations, with larger options 10-20 minutes away.

Water and Weather

Expect warm tropical weather with air temperatures reaching 34°C during the hottest months (February-April). Water temperatures are pleasant year-round—board shorts and bikinis are the standard uniform, though a thin shorty might feel nice for early morning or evening sessions.

Local Tips

Check tide charts before your session—the sandbars are best a few hours either side of low tide, while the lagoons shine at mid-tide. The wind tends to be lighter in the morning and builds through the day, so plan your kite size accordingly. Most importantly, take time to explore the local fishing village and enjoy the fresh seafood after your session.
