Looking for the perfect place to learn kitesurfing or take your skills to the next level in crystal-clear, warm water?

Welcome to Seahorse Bay, one of Egypt's original kitesurfing destinations and still one of its best. Located in the Soma Bay area on the Red Sea coast, this spot has earned its reputation as a world-class learning and progression center thanks to its massive shallow lagoon, consistent winds, and professional infrastructure.

Kitesurfing in Seahorse Bay offers that rare combination of ideal natural conditions and excellent facilities that makes learning efficient and fun.

Seahorse Bay kitesurfing spot

Why It's Perfect for Beginners

The approximately 2km² lagoon is mostly knee to waist-deep with a sandy bottom, creating ideal conditions for learning. The consistent side-offshore wind direction keeps the water smooth, while the limited number of students ensures plenty of space for everyone.

Advanced riders will love low tide, when pools of butter-flat water appear throughout the lagoon—perfect for freestyle progression.

Wind Season

Egypt offers kitesurfing year-round, but the main season runs from March/April through October. Two wind peaks stand out: June and September, when you can almost guarantee wind every day.

Soma Bay boasts over 300 windy days per year with steady winds of 15-25 knots (4-8 Bft). August can be extremely hot with slightly lighter thermal winds.

Water Conditions

Expect flat to slightly choppy conditions depending on wind strength and tide. At low tide, the water reaches its absolute flattest, though very shallow patches require attention. The turquoise water clarity is exceptional—you'll see the bottom clearly throughout your session.

Facilities

Several established German and international kite schools operate here, offering professional instruction, quality rental gear, and storage facilities. The infrastructure makes this one of the most convenient spots in Egypt for visiting kitesurfers.

Climate

Hot desert climate with very little rainfall. Water temperatures stay warm year-round—no wetsuit needed. Summer months (June-August) can see air temperatures exceeding 40°C, so spring and autumn offer more comfortable conditions.

Getting There

Fly into Hurghada (HRG) airport, then taxi or transfer to Soma Bay—approximately 45 minutes south.

Local Tips

Wear reef booties—shells and stones in some areas can be sharp. Book lessons during the windier morning hours when conditions are most stable. The resorts offer good value all-inclusive packages that include kite storage and beach access.
