I can personally vouch for this as every time I visit, I am amazed by all that it offers. So if you’re on the hunt for a great spot to get your kitesurfing fix in Europe, Tarifa should be at the top of your list!

Where is Tarifa?

Nestled in the heart of Andalusia, Tarifa is a charming town situated just off the coast of Cadiz in southern Spain. Its stunning beaches and close proximity to Seville make this a popular destination for both tourists and locals alike – an ideal spot to get away from it all and soak up some sun!

With its crystal-clear waters, white-sand beaches, and beautiful Mediterranean climate, it’s no wonder why people flock here year after year.

Why Should I Go Tarifa?

Tarifa is a great destination for kitesurfers of all levels, as there is a variety of kitesurfing spots and wind conditions to choose from.

The nightlife in Tarifa is also enjoyable, with many bars and restaurants to enjoy. And there are plenty of activities to keep you busy both on and off the water, making Tarifa an ideal destination for a fun and affordable vacation.

It’s important to be aware that the water temperature in Tarifa can be quite cold compared to those used in warmer climates. Also, without a car, some of the best kite spots can be difficult to reach. For these reasons, planning ahead and making sure you have access to transportation will make your trip much more enjoyable!

When to Go Tarifa?

Best Windy Season in Tarifa

If you’re looking for the ideal time to enjoy kitesurfing in Tarifa, then April to October is your best bet. The wind conditions during this period are optimal and will provide you with the perfect opportunity to get out onto the water.

However, if large crowds aren’t something that appeals to you, then consider visiting in either March or November – these months are considered ‘shoulder seasons’ and tend to be less busy on the beaches.

How about wind speed and water temperature:

The average wind speed in Tarifa varies between 12-20 knots, with the highest winds found during summer. The water temperature is also warm enough to kitesurf without a wetsuit from April to October, but can drop significantly outside of these months – so it’s best to check beforehand if you plan on visiting during the winter season.

No matter what time of year you choose to visit, there are plenty of great kitesurfing spots and accommodation options close by that are easy to access and affordable. Most beaches have kitesurfing schools, rentals, and restaurants within walking distance, making it easy for you to enjoy your stay.

Learn Kitesurf in Tarifa Spain

If you’re looking to jumpstart your kitesurfing career, there’s no better place than Tarifa. With its beautiful beaches and strong winds all summer long, it makes the perfect spot for beginners to learn the ropes!

There are several kite schools in Tarifa, including Playa de Los Lances, Playa Valdevaqueros, and Punto Paloma – all of which will be able to get you up and flying in no time.

While these locations may be beginner-friendly when wind conditions are good and the beach isn’t too crowded; the best months for learning to kitesurf in Tarifa would have to be April, May, June, September, or October as November through March can become a little too windy and cold for those just starting out.

How to go to Tarifa?

Driving is the best way to get around in Tarifa, as there is no airport located here. However, if you decide to fly, nearby airports such as Malaga, Seville, or Frontera are available for your convenience. From these locations, you can take a bus or taxi directly into Tarifa.

If you’d like a more cost-effective option then Bla Bla Car offers rides from Algeciras which take less than an hour and include stunning views of the countryside and on clear days even Africa!

Alternatively traveling by ferry from Morocco takes just over an hour and also provides beautiful views along the journey – it’s perfect for both tourists and locals alike who want some time to relax while enjoying the sights.

I personally chose to drive from Malaga straight into Tarifa which only took 45 minutes due to wanting to experience more of rural Spain however driving from Seville would have been much quicker at 30 minutes but with less opportunity for sightseeing during this period of time.

Kitesurf Spots in Tarifa

Tarifa Kiteboarding

Tarifa is my favorite destination in Europe for kitesurfing, as it offers two dominant wind directions. The Poniente is a side-onshore wind that originates from the west, while the Levante is an offshore warm wind coming in from the east.

Due to these two winds often blowing in opposite directions, it creates interesting and diverse conditions for both surfing and kitesurfing enthusiasts alike!

Amongst some of the best spots for kitesurfing are Bolonia, Punta Paloma, Valdevaqueros, Arte Vida, Lon Lances Norte, and Rio Jara; all of which have strong winds and waves that make them ideal locations to practice your skills.

Additionally, they also boast beautiful white sandy beaches with crystal clear waters which makes them even more appealing!

Bolonia

Bolonia is an ideal spot for kitesurfing all year round. The ponente winds, which come from the west, provide strong and consistent wind to power your kite.

The beach has plenty of space for experienced and beginner kitesurfers alike; allowing you to practice freestyle moves or learn new tricks with ease.

However, during summer months it is important to check local regulations before heading out as the authorities may forbid kitesurfing in this area. Nevertheless, Bolonia offers perfect conditions for a great day on the water!

Valdevaqueros

Valdevaqueros is a spectacular kitesurfing destination located in the Tarifa region of Spain. With its combination of strong, consistent Levante and Poniente winds, it offers some of the best conditions for kitesurfers on the international circuit.

It’s an excellent spot for all levels of riders – from beginners to advanced – with plenty to explore and enjoy. Beginners can learn in relatively calm waters while more experienced riders have access to larger swells that are perfect for carving up with freestyle tricks or riding waves.

Arte Vida

Arte Vida is one of the most popular kiteboarding spots in southern Spain. Located in the town of El Puerto de Santa Maria, it’s a great spot for intermediate and upper-level kitesurfers due to its Poniente winds which blow offshore.

The riding style here is mainly freeriding and wave, making it an ideal environment to progress your technique. However, due to the high popularity of this location during the summer season, the waters can get quite crowded so it’s best not to go kitesurfing then if you’re looking for some peaceful time on the waves.

Campo de Futbol

Campo de Futbol is a great place for kitesurfing in the winter months due to its strong north winds. The beach itself stretches far and wide with clean sand, making it perfect for launching your kite.

There are also plenty of beach bars nearby that can provide you with food, drinks, and entertainment – so you can take a break from your kiting session and enjoy some delicious local cuisine or refreshing cocktails!

Whether you are an experienced surfer looking for challenging conditions, or a beginner just wanting to learn the basics of this thrilling sport, Campo de Futbol offers something for everyone.

Los Lances North

Like a canvas splashed with nature’s most vibrant hues, Los Lances North is an expansive haven that invites kitesurfing enthusiasts and water sports lovers to etch their stories of adventure. Its long, sandy beach unfurls like a golden tapestry under the azure sky, offering an expansive playground for those eager to dance with the waves and ride the wind.

As the Poniente wind sweeps in from the right, it stirs the sea into a lively waltz of medium-sized waves. These side-onshore conditions inject a dose of exhilaration into your kitesurfing ride, as you navigate the undulating waves with adrenaline surging through your veins.

However, when the Levante wind decides to join the party from the left, it ushers in a different kind of thrill. Side-offshore conditions tame the sea, smoothing it into a mirror-like flat water surface. This is a stage set for showcasing technical prowess, a platform where seasoned kitesurfers can perform mid-air pirouettes and intricate freestyle tricks, pushing the boundaries of their skills.

Los Lances North is a symphony of diverse wind conditions and sea states, ensuring that every kitesurfing session is a unique narrative. Whether you’re a beginner finding your balance on the board, a seasoned kitesurfer honing your tricks, or a water sports aficionado in search of new challenges, Los Lances North promises to satiate your thirst for adventure and thrill. It’s not just a kitesurfing spot; it’s a tapestry where every ride weaves a vibrant thread into the wind-swept story of your Tarifa adventure.
